Gold is Diablo IV's currency for purchases and equipment work. A reserve gives you room to use vendors and crafting systems without treating every new expense as a separate farming goal. Its value depends on what your character needs next.
Gold in the equipment economy
- Vendors. Buying and selling equipment are separate sides of the economy. Blizzard's 2.5 update reduced item sell values by 60% and vendor buy costs by 90%.
- Crafting. Gold costs sit alongside material costs. The same update stopped material requirements from scaling with Item Power and left Gold costs unchanged.
- Difficulty. Higher difficulties increase the Gold and experience earned from play, giving established characters different farming opportunities.
Whisper rewards
Patch 3.2.1 increased Gold Cache rewards by about three times. Blizzard's Torment XII example rose from approximately 35 million to approximately 100 million Gold. That figure describes a reward cache at that difficulty, rather than the maximum currency your character can hold or a fixed return from every activity.
