Is Destiny 2 Ending? Unvaulting, Timeline and Bungie's Plans (2026)
Bungie is unvaulting Red War, Forsaken, Curse of Osiris and Warmind. What's confirmed, what's not, and when to expect it.
Short answer: no, Destiny 2 is not going dark yet. In its October 2026 Community Update, Bungie confirmed it is bringing back vaulted content (the Red War, Curse of Osiris, Warmind and Forsaken campaigns, their strikes and raids, plus the Menagerie), planning a new "Celebration" update for Destiny 2, and working on a "Destiny Legacy" project. The next big news drop is targeted for February.
Below is everything Bungie actually said, what is confirmed, what is only a stretch goal, and a realistic timeline for when you can play the unvaulted content.
Is Destiny 2 ending?
Bungie did announce an end of service for Destiny 2 earlier, around the Monument of Triumph period, and that is why "is Destiny 2 ending" became such a common search. The October update changes the tone: Bungie says it wants to restore Destiny 2's past, present and future rather than wind the game down.
So the game you play today is getting new work, not just maintenance. Bungie also warns that it is "playing from behind", so expect a slow, staged plan rather than a big reveal. They say directly not to expect a Destiny announcement at The Game Awards this year.
What is being unvaulted (confirmed first pass)
The first unvaulting pass is available to all players and focuses on campaigns:
- Red War, Forsaken, Curse of Osiris and Warmind campaigns
- Strikes from those releases
- Raids and raid lairs from those releases
- The Menagerie activity, with reprised rewards
Not confirmed yet: Bungie has not published a per-raid list. It only said "Raids, and Raid Lairs from the above releases". Our guess (not Bungie's words) is that this means Leviathan and its lairs Eater of Worlds (Curse of Osiris) and Spire of Stars (Warmind). Which raids return, in what order, and with which loot is still unannounced. Forsaken's Last Wish never left the game, so you can already run it today.

Stretch goals: may come later
Bungie is investigating these for unvaulting launch or after, with no promise yet:
- Free-roam destinations (public events, Lost Sectors, Escalation Protocol and more)
- Seasonal activities from Sundial (Season 9) to The Coil (Season 23)
- Weapon updates for raids and raid lairs
- PvP maps
What is not coming back
For technical or strategic reasons, Bungie currently has no path to bring back:
- An updated New Light experience
- Seasonal story missions
- The Gambit map Kell's Grave
- Seasonal hubs such as the Eliksni Quarter
Destiny 2 unvaulting release date: realistic timeline
| Stage | When | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Initial greenlight to scope the work and find a partner | June | Done |
| Assumptions validated, plan announced | September | Done |
| Pre-production and proof of work (porting legacy content) | Now until about January–February 2027 | In progress |
| Full production: porting all the content | About 12 months after that | Planned |
| Next major Destiny comms update | February | Planned |
| Possible unvaulting release | Early 2028 at the earliest (our estimate) | Not confirmed by Bungie |
Bungie says unvaulting progress will be shared along the way, but it gave no release date. Pre-production runs until roughly January/February 2027, and full production is expected to take about 12 months after that, so early 2028 is the earliest realistic window. That is our math, not a date Bungie announced. Treat any specific release date you see elsewhere as a guess.
Destiny 2 future: Celebration, Legacy and [Redacted]
Beyond unvaulting, Bungie listed three anchors for Destiny's future. Each will get its own "progress bar" update:
- Destiny 2 "Celebration": a celebration inside Destiny 2, beyond Monument of Triumph, with new updates for players. Next progress update in February.
- Destiny "Legacy": Bungie wants the whole Destiny journey, which started over a decade ago, to be playable where you play today. More info early next year, with a progress update in February.
- [Redacted]: no date. Bungie calls the long-term goal "a new, forever Destiny".
What to play and farm in Destiny 2 right now
Unvaulting is at least a year away, so the best use of your time is to get your Guardian strong and farm the content that is live today:
- Level up so unvaulted raids are not a wall on day one.
- Finish the current campaigns on Legendary for their rewards.
- Close out Monument of Triumph goals like the Immortal title while they are still the focus.
- Farm this week's rotator raid for its weapons and catalysts.
- Run Last Wish, which is already in the game, for its loot.
- Learn current raids such as Crota's End and Garden of Salvation.
FAQ
Is Destiny 2 shutting down?
Not right now. Bungie is actively working on unvaulting, a Destiny 2 Celebration update and a Destiny Legacy project.
When does Destiny 2 unvaulting come out?
No official date. Pre-production runs until about January–February 2027, then full porting is expected to take about 12 months, which points to early 2028 at the earliest. That is our estimate, not Bungie's.
Is Menagerie coming back?
Yes. Menagerie is part of the confirmed first pass, with reprised rewards.
Will there be a Destiny 3?
Bungie has not announced one. It says it is building "a new future for Destiny" and the next major update is planned for February.
